Ghanaian Parents Timing Conception on April 2nd to get MTN’s Christmas Baby Hampers

In what is now becoming a well-calculated annual event, many Ghanaian couples seem to be strategically planning their pregnancies to coincide with the Christmas season in a desperate bid to secure the coveted MTN Christmas baby hampers. These hampers, brimming with baby soap, diapers, and the promise of future data bundles, are, according to the mobile network, part of a broader mission to spread love and, of course, brand awareness.

Previously known for exorbitant mobile data prices and providing spotty mobile internet service, MTN Ghana has this year generously donated 140 hampers, 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes to 5000 lucky mothers at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital – averaging 0.028 hampers per mother. The company’s spokesperson, Samuel Bartels, while conveniently ignoring all questions about mobile data, excitedly announced that they’ve distributed a whopping 600 hampers across 16 regions.

Rubbishing criticisms that it's all just an innovative approach to future customer acquisition, Mr. Bartels added: "It's not as though the company expects these newborns to immediately grab a phone and sign up for a new sim card already, but you know, these babies, they really know their way around phones, and we don't want to stand in the way of their happiness."

Reacting to the news, several Ghanaians who missed out on the freebies now feel the enchantment of Valentine's Day waning. "All you end up with 9 months later is some baby with a big head and a big stomach born on 7th November with no hampers."
